North Chagrin Reservation is rapidly
gaining a reputation for being the #1 place in the world to photograph
Wood Ducks. While this colorful waterfowl species is normally extremely
shy, the ducks have become accustom to human presence here. Though
the park forbids feeding the ducks, it's not uncommon to see a wood
duck sneaking a scrap of bread from a park visitor's hand.
During late September the Wood Duck drakes
molt into fresh plumage just in time for the leaves around the pond
to change color creating a perfect combination for one of the biggest
color overloads in the natural world.
During the Wood Duck Worshop, Matthew shows you how to get the ducks into that perfect photogenic spot, whether it be next to some reeds or swimming through a brilliant refection. Matthew also knows exactly which parts of the ponds to shoot from and when, to take advatage of the duck's daily patterns and work with the light. Flight shot opportunities are available in late morning. Matthew also provides natural props to enhance compositions if desired. Exposure compensation can be a real art when it comes to the reflections in the ponds and the plumage of the ducks, but Matthew will be relaying his camera data and settings as he shoots next to the participants to make life easier for photographers not accustomed to photographing at North Chagrin.

Along with having one to three dozen
wood ducks to photograph at any one time, we may also have opportunities
to photograph Northern Pintail, Hooded Mergansers, Northern Shovelers,
Mallards, and Canada Geese in the ponds as well as Ceder Waxwings
and American Robins feeding on berry trees near the nature center.

What you need:
On this tour, you'll be able to use everything
from wide angle lenses to super telephotos and everything in between.
Pack a variety of lenses if you have them. Please remember to bring
your own camera body, flash, and tripod.
- If we have cloudy weather, the photos
often turn out as good or better than in sunny weather, but having
a fill flash really helps bring the colors to life in overcast conditions.
- Once a participant commits to doing
the tour, a down payment is required right away to reserve the date.
Pay with personal check or via PayPal to matthewstudebaker@yahoo.com.
Unfortunately, refunds are impossible. For a one day tour, the entire
amount is needed to secure your date. For multiple days, the down
payment will be at least half the total amount, then the other half
when the participant arrives.
