Iowa Eagles

Dates: February 1-3, 2013

Fee: $950 includes 3 day shooting in the field, mid-afternoon slideshows and photoshop demonstrations when we have a little down time. Also includes the bait fish for the Eagles.

Deposit: $300

From: Le Claire, Iowa

Leaders: Matthew Studebaker

Eagles gather on the mighty Mississippi River during cold winter months to fish the ice-free waters around the dams. Iowa has one of the largest concentrations of eagles, and the birds are often reasonably approachable and will often dive for the fish we toss out for them. There are usually a few dozen eagles around, perched in cluttered trees and randomly flying over the river. We'll do our best to photograph the eagles on our own terms, using fish to try to lure them into more photogenic poses and settings.

Travel considerations: Quad City International Airport (MLI)

Equipment: I recommend bringing a digital SLR with matching lens. On this workshop, the longer your lens the easier it will be to make outstanding photos. Although sometimes the eagles come close enough for something as short as a 200mm, we'll toss fish primarily far enough away that we can use lenses in the 400-600mm range.

Physical Activity Requirements: We will shoot close to the vehicles. The most demanding part of the trip will simply be standing in the cold. If you dress in layers and dress warm you should be fine.

Likely Species on the eagle trip -

  • Bald Eagle
  • Snowy Owl (rare)
  • Rough-legged Hawk
  • Common Goldeneye

Detailed Itinerary will be provided upon further request or upon confirming a reservation.
