South East Arizona is home to an incredible diversity of bird species. Many of these species can not be found anywhere else north of the border. From hummingbirds, to roadrunners, orioles, to quail, we'll have the opportunity to get within several feet of some of the most amazing and beautiful birds in the country.
But this workshop is about more than getting you close to these species. I will show you how to take a good photo to the next level, how to use light and backgrounds to portray our subjects in the most beautiful way possible, and how to control every aspect of each photo, from where the birds land to getting them to give you that perfect head turn. I also know exactly where to set up and when, how to take advantage of the birds’ daily patterns and work with the light. Natural props such as flowers for the hummingbirds will be provided.
Travel considerations:
For those of you who are flying in to Arizona we recommend flying
into Tucson International Airport and then driving down to Green Valley.
Lodging in Green Valley, AZ:
If you can,

What you need:
Equipment: I recommend bringing a digital SLR with matching lens. On this workshop, you'll be able to get fairly
close to many species while in blinds, but the longer your lens the
easier it will be to make outstanding photos at our Arizona locations. When you calculate your digital crop factor (usually 1.5x the normal focal length or so for digital cameras today) and slap on your tele extenders (1.4x or 2x) you should have the equivalent of at least 400mm. 600mm-1000mm is even better.
.Pack a variety of lenses if you have them. The landscapes are amazingly beautiful. We'll have blinds, water
drips, and feeders ready to use. I will be there days in
advance perfecting perches, positioning blinds for ideal backgrounds,
etc. The majority of birds we will photograph will be near water drips,
allowing the photographers to remain seated in a blind while the birds
come in for a drink. We'll also have native flowers and sugar water
feeders to attract hummingbirds.
Physical Activity Requirements: Low activity. We’ll be shooting near the car most of the time and shooting from seated positions. You certainly don’t need to be athletic to do this workshop. If you can walk a normal city block or go grocery shopping you should be just fine.
